RUMBEK, February 28, 2011 [Gurtong] - Bishop Mazzolari said that the Catholic Bishops of Sudan held a meeting in Juba over the weekend and among the top issues discussed was the need to pray for unity during the period prior to the day of South Sudan Independence. The Bishop further revealed that the planned prayer initiative will be called “10 Steps to Unity in South Sudan”, adding that the program will officially kick off in May and conclude on Independence Day. The prayer initiative will be built upon weekly themes drawn from the Social Teaching of the Church. The entire program will be developed in the coming weeks with the help of personnel from Solidarity with Southern Sudan (SSS) in collaboration with Catholic Relief Service (CRS). Bishop Mazzolari expressed hope that the spiritual program shall result in a new nation of South Sudan in which citizens live in unity, adding that the prayers are also intended for the time beyond the day of independence. The last prayer program by the same church in South Sudan was called “101 Days of prayer for a peaceful referendum in Sudan”. Communities in South Sudan and other parts of the world in were in solidarity with the prayer initiative and appreciated the Catholic Church in South Sudan’s efforts.
