The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General
(SRSG) for The Sudan, Haile Menkerios, has condemned the recent
clashes in Abyei area.

He said the fighting is a clear violation of the letter and spirit of
the Kadugli Agreements signed last month. Menkerios urged the parties
to recommit themselves to the full implementation of the Agreements,
including the establishment of the agreed High-Level Implementation
Committee and its effective functioning as a mechanism to contain such
incidents and prevent their recurrence.

Menkerios also urged the two parties to expedite agreement on the
settlement of the Abyei issue as promised by Sudan's Presidency last
month.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Information and Broadcasting in the
Government of Southern Sudan (GoSS), Barnaba Marial Benjamin, has
described the attacks in Abyei as 'inhumane.' Addressing the press in
Juba on Wednesday, Benjamin said GoSS is urging the national
government to protect the Ngok Dinka in Abyei.

The Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) Spokesman, Phillip Aguer,
has urged the United Nations peacekeeping force to protect the people
of Abyei.

In response, the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) has strongly denied any
involvement in the recent fighting in the Abyei area. Speaking to
Radio Miraya, SAF Spokesman, Swarmi Khalid Saad, said the army is
outside the Abyei area.
