WAU, 18th March, 2011 [Gurtong] – United Nations High Commission for
Refugees head of office for Western Bahr el Ghazal State, Mr. Robert
Gagwa has informed Governor Zackaria Hussen that the recent returnees
from the North need land for resettlement before the next rainy
session.

“We the UNHCR bodies are working hard towards the protection of
returnees and to make sure that the most vulnerable received proper
assistance from the UN,” said Gagwa.

The UNHCR officials clarified that people have high expectations and
there should be visible evidence of improving their livelihoods,
living conditions and rights. They chose to come back to the South
Sudan in hope of independence.

They added that as soon as land is allocated, UNHCR will be ready to
support the returnees with seeds and tools enabling them to become
self supporting and independent, after they acquire a suitable land
for cultivation.

“The returnees lack schools and other basic needs since they have not
yet achieved their settlement land,” said Gagwa.

Governor Hussen assured the UNHCR officials that in collaboration with
the State Ministry of Infrastructure, the State government is quite
concerned that the returnees must land for their settlement.
