JUBA, 25 March 2011 – “Waging peace in Sudan” is a new book written by
Hilde Johnson launched on Thursday at Nyakuron Cultural Center, Juba.
The book depicts the political, socio-economic revolution following
fruitless efforts of the two Sudanese leaderships: Omar Hassan Al
Bashir and Late Dr John Garang.

The main discussant of the book was Prof. Taban Loliong, a lecturer in
Juba University attended by dignitaries from the Government of
Southern Sudan, academicians from Juba University and other
intellectuals.

The launching was shared by H.E. Cirino Hiteng, the GOSS Minister of
Presidential Affairs.

Also in present were; H.E Barnaba Marial, the GOSS Minister for
Information; H.E. Deng Alor, the GOSS Minister for Regional
Cooperation; Gen (Rtd) Joseph Lagu GOSS Presidential Advisor on
Special Affairs; and GOSS Under Secretary of Public Service Rebecca
Joshua Okwaci among others.

With flash back, the book establishes the efforts exerted for peace
negotiations years back in the late 1980s between the North and South
Sudan.

Mrs. Johnson at one point revealed that, from 1990s, Osman Taha had
moved six to seven times to meet Dr. John Garang’s trusted
intermediary in UK to appeal for talks.

During her lecture she emphasized that the real core of the
Comprehensive Peace Agreement, CPA, was not only to silence the guns
but to create a just Sudan where all the marginalized people had a
fair say in the country’s affairs and in the resources allocation.

She underscored that the CPA imagined a democratic transformation of
the country.

The major team of the book “waging peace in Sudan” also explored the
significance of the peace accord which is able to make the people of
Sudan and especially Southern Sudan able to exercise their right to
self determination.

She recalled the long negotiation process which led to the signing of
the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, CPA, and outlined some of the major
milestones in its trail. She also mentioned the challenges that had
surmounted the CPA to its realization.

She said that, the major hurdles in the negotiation had been how to
share the national wealth and the application of Sharia law. She also
lauded the role played by President Omar al-Bashir in convincing his
military commanders to give peace a chance in the country.

Mrs. Johnson who is also the Deputy Executive Director of UNICEF in
South Sudan said that, the new South Sudan will face many challenges
some of which she identified as fostering sustainable development and
corruption.

She said the nation will have to overcome these to enable it to meet
the needs and aspirations of the people.
