WAU, 23nd April, 2011 [Gurtong] - Hundreds of Civilians were evacuated
over the weekend in Manken of Mayom County in Unity State following
heavy fighting between the Sudan People’s Liberation Army, SPLA and
rebel groups believed to be loyal to Peter Gatdet.

Speaking to Gurtong media on phone, the SPLA spokesman Col. Phillip
Aguer said that Peter Gatdet’s forces backed by the radical Misseriya
tribe waged series of attacks on Civilians of Manken Payam on Thursday
morning causing civilians to evacuate the area.

“Forces Loyal to Peter Gatdet have been seriously attacking civilians
and SPLA barracks since last Tuesday in Mayom County,” said Aguer.

He added that, “Since there are justified concerns over the impact and
consequences of rebels’ atrocities on our Civilians, we have now
deployed SPLA forces in the area to protect them.”

The presence of SPLA troops in Mayom County has quelled fear of
civilians affected by the radical rebel’s attacks. Aguer added that
the civilians must evacuate the area until the SPLA forces ensure
safety.

The attacks in Mayom has led to many civilians casualties, however,
Aguer said that the number of dead bodies is yet to be statistically
confirmed, as many others flee the town.

Aguer explained that those who have taken arms against the Government
of Southern Sudan with the aim of killing innocent civilians will be
stopped.

“SPLA is the National Army of South Sudan, our mission is to protect
our people from either internal or external attacks,” Aguer
reiterated.

Numerous civilians have been confirmed dead and others losing their
properties following the recent attacks. According to Aguer’s
statement to the media, the situation is now returning to normal.

Now that the CPA talks are in progress before the 9th of July
deadline, the Khartoum Government has been widely blamed in sections
of the media and senior South Sudanese politicians over the atrocities
in the South allegedly coordinating and empowering militia groups to
assault and destabilize the GOSS under the leadership of the Sudan
People Liberation Movement, SPLM, Aguer disclosed.

The statement further indicated that alongside the Northern regime’s
allegations of sponsoring the rebels against the South, Peter Gatdet
is now using local Misseriya people backed by his forces to attack
civilians in various regions in the South.

Khartoum has also traded accusations that South Sudan is accommodating
the Darfur rebels which the SPLA spokesman has proved to be baseless.

Aguer also clarified that the new rebel movements are carrying out
assault on innocent civilians as evidently seen in the recent attacks
and looting of the former Mayom County’s Commissioner Car with many
other properties.

South Sudan has more evidence on the ground indicating the Northern
regime’s support to the rebels which include the recent plane from
Khartoum captured by the SPLA and now kept in Juba.

The International Criminal Court, ICC is keen on such Africans leaders
involved in creating war crimes against humanity. The ICC would serve
to focus on suspects’ rebels in South Sudan and bring criminals to
book just like Jean Perre Bemba of DRC.
