The GOSS Parliament suspended a debate on Tuesday that was scheduled to discuss the status of the security situation in South Sudan. Honourable Members of Parliament said there was no need for them to discuss security issues while they had no general knowledge on the security situation all over South Sudan, adding that the debate was terminated until the two ministers appeared before the house. The decision to terminate the debate was a reaction to the earlier presentation of a finding by the assembly committee on the recent insecurity situation in the Greater Upper Nile region. The Committee Chairperson of Information and Culture in the SSLA Hon. Joy Kwaje who presented the findings to the House said that, it is important for the two wings of the government, executive and legislature to solve insecurity issues before South gains its full independency on 9th July 2011. She said that, it will be very challenging if South Sudan celebrates its independency while bloodshed continues in some parts of the region. “It is important to handle the issue now before South becomes an independent nation as this would affect the beginning of the new State,” Kwaje said. Kwaje told Gurtong that the two ministers are expected to appear in the House at soon. Exclusively, Onyoti Adigo Nyikwech, the leader of the Opposition in SSLA said that it was very important that the two ministers addressed the Assembly on the security issues before independence for a resolution will be reached. “We should address security issues now so that the Southerners would celebrate independence freely,” said the Opposition leader. He added that, if it is clarified that Northerners are the sources supporting the militias in South Sudan then the two governments should have a dialogue and remedy the situation before July. The opposition leader urged that a peaceful resolution, using dialogue to incorporate rebels into the system is the best option to address the gap between the government and the militia groups. “Using arms to catch the rebels is not the solution to the security situation but there should be a dialogue between rebels and the government,” Onyoti said. MPs expressed concern about the spiralling insecurity situation in the region. Posted in: Home -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "JFD info" group.
