JUBA, 29th May, 2011 [Gurtong]-A group of activists advocating for the
rights of the people of Abyei have said that unless the Sudanese
government honours the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, CPA the issue of
Abyei will not be resolved.

“Honouring of the agreement signed is the only solution to the
problems of Abyei,” Dr. Chol Deng Alak, Chairperson of Abyei
Referendum Forum, ARF told Gurtong on Thursday in an official
interview in Juba.

The CPA signed in 2005 has spelled the Abyei Protocol and mandated the
people of the oil rich region to exercise their rights of self
determination early this year. However, the Sudanese government is
accused of delaying the process for their own benefits just less than
two months to the expiry of the peace deal.

Last week the Sudanese President Omar Hassan Al Bashir unilaterally
dismissed the Abyei region administration then deployed Sudan Armed
Forces, SAF, leading to bombing and consequent killings that displaced
over 1000,000 people in the region.

Tens of civilians are reported to have been killed as thousands fled
the region. Dr. Chol said that fighting and dishonouring the agreement
will not address the problems of the region but will further fuel
instability.

“The use of lethal force is violating human rights of the Abyei
people. Any alternative to use as an attempt to address the issue of
Abyei besides agreements signed will not end the crisis of Abyei,” he
said.

Dr. Chol also accused the United State Envoy to Sudan Scot Gration to
have suggested un-proportionate division of the oil rich region last
year; he said if Scot’s suggestions were to be followed, the North and
South would share Abyei in the ratio of 3:1 respectively.

“Gration had suggested division of Abyei between the two regions’
parties of the National Congress Party, NCP taking 77% of Abyei while
Sudan People’s Liberation Movement, SPLM to take 23%,” Dr. Chol
recalled.
