RUMBEK, June 4th, 2011 [Gurtong] - Members of the Government of Lakes
State comprising of Lawmakers, the Executive and the Sudan People’s
Liberation Movement secretariat in the State held an emergency meeting
for peace with Southern Sudan parliament deputy speaker Daniel Awet
Akot yesterday in Rumbek.

The meeting held at the Southern Sudan Logistic hotel called upon
entire Lakes State inhabitants to remain calm and to be fully prepared
for the celebration of the Independence Day. The delegation urged for
an immediate stop of cattle raids and inter-clan conflicts as well as
gangs who commandeer cars on the Rumbek Central and Cueibet County
roads.

The main agenda included insecurity impact in Lakes State,
collaboration among party members as well way forward to support SPLM
party at grassroots level.

Hon. Daniel Awet called upon Lakes State citizens to cease from
internal disputes as they appealed for a peaceful State that would
welcome the independent Republic of South Sudan in July.

Hon. Awet said, “Lakes State was the centre for South Sudan
self-determination struggle. It became the base for UN and many NGOs.
It was also the base for the struggle of the SPLA/M. The world was
with us in 2000 to 2003 here in Lakes State. All children of Bahr el
Ghazal were brought here for training. Now Lakes has become the worst,
even though our neighbours have problems, they are better than us.”

“We were born and brought up our children in war here. We had a
successful referendum on January with 99% voting for secession,” he
added.

Awet urged them to note that the State belonged to them. They are in
leadership through these communities – “let us talk to the youth to
address their grievances. Let us protect these children because they
are dying in tribal conflicts… we have a long way to go,” he reminded
them.

Mr. Marial Amum, the Lakes State Member of Parliament, challenged Awet
saying that SPLM party in the State had lost control since Awet went
to Juba.

Amum said that “SPLM party in Rumbek got powerless since Daniel Awet’s
loss in the elections and decision to be based in Juba. The SPLM
deputy chairman of State also resigned and the SPLM State secretary
was unwell -there are no people to talk to these youths.”

Hon. Chol Tong Mayay, the Governor of Lakes State said that “there is
a greater need to heal all wounds of 2010 April general Sudan
elections” He also added that his opponents from other political
parties were disappointed seriously even though they still had a
chance for forgiveness.

Lakes State is faced by various elements of insecurity such as trial
clashes, cattle raiding and hijackings in the main roads sighting
political involvements in fuelling the situation.
