By Bonifacio Taban Kuich June 24, 2011 (BENTIU) - Authorities in the South Sudan’s oil-rich Unity State, called upon all citizens to clean the main populated towns ahead of the region’s independence celebrations on 9 July. South Sudan’s army (SPLA) and police lined the streets of - state capital - Bentui and Rubkotna yesterday to make sure that the town looks clean on independence day. On Friday Bentui’s commissioner Mayang Teay told Sudan Tribune, that “we need to prepare ourselves through promoting self-hygiene and keeping the general environment very smooth in order to welcome the sovereignty of new nation South Sudan”. Teay said that they had managed to clean the areas which were dirty in the town. The state authorities have said that anyones with a dirty shop, or shop front as well as people caught throwing bottles or plastics bags in the market, shall be charged with 150 Sudanese Pound. If they are unable to pay they will be sent to prison for some days during which they would be forced to clean the town.
