TURALEI, 25th June, 2011-[Gurtong] – Large numbers of Abyei’s
Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs living at Turalei in Twic County of
Warrap State were visited by the UN’s Deputy High Commissioner for
Human Rights, Kyung Wha Kang, to monitor on their affairs as the
humanitarian crisis in Abyei worsens.

While speaking to Gurtong at the Kwajok airstrip in Warrap State after
her visit to Abyei IDPs camp in Twic County, Kyung Wha said that the
UN-Human Right was deeply concerned about the IDPs situation and the
local community in the area.

“We’re very concerned about the Abyei IDPs situation in Turalei. As
the UN, we need to give humanitarians support to them and the local
communities that were affected by the conflict in Abyei. We know that
the Abyei situation was worse during the first fighting and most of
the IDPs must have made their way to Twic County.”

She said that UN system needed much more support but still they will
go ahead to support the operations in Twic community and Abyei IDPs.

Kyung’s visit was to assess how the situation was being handled by the
UN staff and to tackle some issues that were not possible with
humanitarian aid organizations in the field.

It was encouraging for her that the local communities were kind to the
IDPs living in the area and that was a good sign of the cooperation
between the host communities with the Abyei’s IDPs.

“The IDPs situation is stable at the moment but there is need to deal
with what they want to do through humanitarian aid organizations that
are providing the basic needs especially food and shelter,” Kyung
said.

South Sudan is facing a lot of challenges and it is upon international
community to support them materially, mentally and financially, Kyung
reiterated.
