Dear Readers,

Let add my voice to those who oppose the ban on public use of the
national anthem. I agree with those who say it is a sign of joy - and
may I add that it is also a great way to popularize the anthem so that
it is instantly recognized by all citizens of the Republic.

What is more disrespectful to a Republican anthem than to be warned by
"security"? Does anyone realize that reliance on "security" agents is
a sign of weakness, it marks the return to reliance on "security" to
impose unpopular ideas and ways of doing the public's business.

Please, allow citizens of one of the 193 nations and Africa's 54th to
enjoy their new-found glory - let them relish the feeling that this is
real, it is not a dream! Glory be to the anthem, and freedom to those
who want to enjoy it in all decent ways! An anthem ringtone is a
better daily reminder of our new identity - it is neither a
blasphemous nor a disgraceful way to show love for the anthem.

Lets get out of the box of oppression where even feelings are
regulated or banned!

EES Citizens Warned Of Using National Anthem As Ringtones
The Spokesperson for Eastern Equatoria State Legislative Assembly

TORIT, 16th July, 2011 [Gurtong] – The Spokesperson for Eastern
Equatoria State Legislative Assembly, (EESLA) Hon. Joseph Kolombos
Lokodo has announced to the public a prohibition of using South Sudan
National Anthem in mobile phones as ringtones.

He says the National Anthem is an important national symbol for the
country and should be used with respect and dignity only on all
official and ceremonial occasions.

Hon. Lokodo who is also the Specialized Standing Committee's
Chairperson for Information at EESLA said that the move followed a
decision taken as a top directive after the office of security
signalled all the States uniformly to immediately stop the practice.

Similar urgent message was conveyed that no one in South Sudan should
use the National Anthem as a ringtone, added one of security personnel
who preferred anonymity.

The South Sudanese National Anthem was first sung after the world's
newest nation, Republic of Sudan, declared independence on Saturday
9th of July, 201.

Most South Sudanese public however opposed the speakers warning saying
that the ringtones unite the nation and it’s a public expression of
joy and pride of being Southerners.

However some concurred with the ban saying it should only be used
during important public days or ceremonies not limited to sporting and
community occasions.

Hon. Patrick Lodinga Kotein, Advisor for Social Services to the State
Government welcomes the move while saying over-playing the country’s
National Anthem would be monotonous and loss of paying respect to its
constitutional intention.

“If you look at any nation in the world; you will realize that the
monotony will make citizens lose attention and honour when the anthem
is played during public functions or hoisting of the flag. Therefore,
it requires us to immediately stop using it as a ringtone or singing
it unnecessarily.

Hon Lodinga clarified that honouring the announcement will mean
commitment to honour our Anthem and Nation as a whole.
