JUBA, 22nd July, 2011 [Gurtong] - Unity State Governor Hon. Taban Deng
Gai has called for an immediate intervention by the United Nations
agencies and other humanitarian organizations over food shortage in
his State.

Speaking to Gurtong on Wednesday in Juba, Taban said following mass
influx of Internally Displaced Persons, (IDPs) from South Kordofan,
Abyei and other parts of the State, the humanitarian situation is
worsening and that basic services are lacking.

“The biggest challenge is food insecurity,” the Governor said. He
pointed out that, an estimated 20,000 IDPs have camped in the State, a
demand that the government cannot adequately cater for.

“We are appealing to the UN agencies to help the people of Nuba
Mountains and messiriah who are coming to Unity State looking for
safety and better services,” Taban urged.

He said the situation has also worsened following the return of South
Sudanese who were displaced to Khartoum and the neighbouring countries
during the civil war.

The Governor pointed out that the impact of militia activities has
also contributed to the alarming humanitarian situation.

The United Nations has confirmed that about 300,000 displaced South
Sudanese to Khartoum returned to the South since October last year
till date.

In a leadership forum held in Juba on May 2011 where all the Ten
State’s Governors convened to discuss security and humanitarian
situation facing the region, lack of basic services was pointed out as
an acute challenge affecting the IDPs.

Taban pointed out to Gurtong that, despite lack of basic services that
appeared challenge in the State, insecurity incidences have however
minimized with continued influx of IDPs from Southern Kordofan.
