WAU, 25th July, 2011 [Gurtong] - Over 200 illegal firearms and several
rounds of ammunition were seized on Friday, after a joint massive
disarmament operation by the Western Bahr el Ghazal State security
forces, searching house to house in the State Capital Wau.

The operation against illegal weapons was launched on Friday by the
State unified forces, adopted by SPLA of Division (5), National
security agencies, Police forces, Fire brigades and Wildlife forces.
210 hidden AK 47 models and other various gun models were recovered in
the operation.

In the dramatic statement released on Saturday in Wau stadium by the
State Governor, Hon. Rizik Zackaria Hassan in reference to the
operation held on Friday, the Governor explained to the officers that
during the post – independence phase, Western Bahr el Ghazal State
government will mainly focus on security of its entire citizens and
stability, service delivery and providing improved living conditions
for the people of the Republic of South Sudan.

“The operation we have conducted today will reduce unnecessary use of
guns, night robbery attempts in Wau and will ensure proper security in
the State,” said Hassan.

“This is a historical day for the State residents and entire people of
South Sudan after the declaration of its independence on 9th July to
free the association of civilians from use of illegally possessed
guns,” the Governor added.

Hassan warned the Special Forces working in the State to restrain
themselves from carrying guns unnecessarily within the town if not on
assignment or official duty.

The special operation came to force as a result of last month’s crimes
committed by unknown armed robbers with disturbing murder cases
reported during night hours in Wau town alone and looting of
properties.

In 2009, the Government of South Sudan, GOSS launched a related
general massive security operation in all the Ten States of South
Sudan.

The order was made to inquire and seized tens of thousands of illegal
firearms and ammunitions believed to be in the hands of civilians,
feared to be backing tribal clashes and cattle raid among the South
Sudanese communities.

The operation managed to recover a good numbers of AK 47 gun models,
pistols, several rounds of ammunitions and opium but more complains
were raised later that during the process, a lot of people were robbed
of their cash by the officers.

The collected firearms in Wau were assembled in the State stadium and
believed to be taken to armoury for safe custody.
