RUMBEK, 25th July, 2011 [Gurtong] – Students from the various Sudanese
Universities held a consultative meeting in Rumbek yesterday tackling
insecurity and unemployment in the State. The meeting was attended by
Lakes State Minister of Education Daniel Ayual Makoi, who also serves
as Deputy Governor in Lakes State Government.

Speaking during the launch session at the South Sudan logistic (SSL)
compound, Makoi said that the youth consultative forum was a very
instructive and educative body. Hon. Makoi promised Lakes State
University students that the State government will promote education
and be fully committed to support girl child education.

“There is no nation around the world without youths; there is no
nation that can be built without facilitation of the youth because
they are the strongest age group of any nation,” said Makoi.

The Education Minister clarified that the young generation is the
beauty of each and every community and it really gives pleasure to see
that youths are trying to recognize their talents in support of nation
building.

Lakes State Government has been unstable due to insecurity caused by
cattle raiders, robbery and weak judicial organs in the State. The
State Governor has appealed severally to South Sudan Government
leadership for judicial reforms and to deploy enough police forces but
due to bureaucracy, the process will take long than expected.

Speaking during the forum, the Chairman of the Student Consultative
Forum Mr. Moses Mading Khoch, said the forum is focusing on the
students affairs, organization of students bodies and how students
could dialogue with their respective communities in order to lower
tribalism in governance.

Mading affirmed that, “the main objective here is to promote peace,
unity and progress among the students and the entire community of
Lakes State and the neighbouring States. The second aim is to allow
students to organize themselves and fully participate in social and
cultural activities irrespective of their tribe sections, gender,
religion and language. The other objective is to promote the literacy
levels and encourage education in Lakes State especially in support of
girl child education.”

University students from South Sudan, Sudan and East Africa in Rumbek
who were the main delegates, expressed their views that the body will
transform people in the community to uphold peace and reconcile
conflicting groups and also to promote education.

Matur Theem Abil, a student from Juba University in Khartoum said that
there are enormous challenges facing youths in Lakes State that need
to be addressed by the State Government urgently. He affirmed that
students should participate fully on the affairs that promote unity
and reconciliation among the community. Matur appealed to the State
Government to address issues of unemployment from various sectors,
this would curb social vices in the society.

Another student Akur Costa Mapuor, appealed for girls in schools to
continue with their education. She added that the girl child in school
need to be given high protection by the government in order to
complete their studies without forced marriages being imposed on them
by relatives.
