Unfortunately I was forced to punt on this one.  The filesystem in 
question was on a server holding user home areas, and I needed to get it 
back up a.s.a.p.  So I reformatted and am currently restoring from backup.

...Which is too bad, I'd love to know how to fix a filesystem by hand.
