Thanks Ted.  If I can spend a little time actually attaching labels to these 
graphics that might be even more useful.

I try to teach my clients how and when to listen to JAWS and how to know when 
they can "hit next" (whatever next may be) once they've immediately realized 
that what they're sitting on is definitely not what they want.  Many of them, 
particularly when starting out, will listen to JAWS announce every last bit of 
data for a file or folder they've landed on before hitting an up arrow, down 
arrow, or first character to zoom along to the next thing that starts with it, 
and that's a time-wasting luxury that grad students in particular don't have.

If I named these icons to announce, Folder, PDF, Word file, Excel file, JPEG 
Image, etc., instead of Graphic 999 or the like that might give a comfort level 
with moving right along.
