Lauren,

          I am presuming that you no longer have any earlier versions of JAWS 
on your machine.  However, even if you do, the within-release updates work on 
the existing installed software for that release, which they consider "older."  
I have a couple of clients with multiple versions of JAWS on their machines 
since having the old security blanket during transition periods can be very 
helpful.  It's not posed a problem, at least not so far.

          That error message is so vague it's difficult to know what might 
trigger it.  When I've received error messages like this, that really don't 
give you anything to go on, I've made a habit of dialing 727-803-8600 and 
getting FS Tech Support involved.  Most often a solution has been found, but 
they need to be aware that the error message feedback they're giving isn't 
helpful (often even to them - I've had to run installs with logging so that 
they could figure out what's up).
