You know, when I first got Outlook, my messages would appear as read, if I ever went by them. Someone told me some kind of setting to put so that they would remain listed as unread until opened, but I don't know what that feature was. There are about three places where I would try to find the setting. One is Alt-F-T-M, and there are so many settings there, like 60, then Alt-V-C-V or Alt-V-V-s. I kind of don't think it would be in sort though. That is the last one.

Unread Messages filter If you are looking at your mailbox via a filtered view or via the Unread Mail Search Folder and also have the option configured to automatically mark emails as read after x seconds, then it could happen that the messages automatically disappear when they get marked as read. If you are in an (Unread Mail) Search Folder, switch back to the normal Inbox folder and see if your items are there. If you are in the Inbox folder already, make sure your view is not set to “Unread Messages in This Folder” or that you have a filter applied to your view.
