Marianne, The easiest way to do this on Windows 7 through Windows 10 is to open Control Panel and select the "Default Programs" dialog. Once that's open the link that reads "Associate a file type or protocol with a program" presents you with a long list of file extensions and, for each, the default program used to open that type of file. Find the file extensions you want to have Word open and activate the Change Program button for each, selecting Word.
For instance, once the extension list is up you could search for .docx, which should already have Word set as its default program, but if it somehow had been associated with some other program by malware, virus, or some operator error, you can hit the "Change Program" button and select Word from the program list (or browse for it if, by some chance, it weren't already in the list).
