Very good point, Dave.

My wife was the original owner of the Windows 7 machine I'm currently using,
so changing the name on that one should not be a problem.

The other old Windows XP laptop computer that I now use exclusively for ham
radio purposes was purchased from a friend who was the original owner before
me.

The Windows XP software was on the machine when I bought it, but other
software that I have installed is owned by me.

I'll discuss the situation with this second computer with my friend before
proceeding.

I'd wonder if this would have an effect on any software licensing? Seems as
though a registered owner is the one who has purchased the operating system
and who has the rights to updates in the future. I'd tread very carefully on
this and do some research and/or talk with Microsoft before changing it.

My position: If it isn't broken, don't fix it.

try the following:

1. Logon to Windows 7 computer with any account that has
administrative privileges.

2. Click on Start button and in the search box type REGEDIT and
press enter key.

3. On User Account Control confirmation box click on Yes button
to continue.

4. On the opened Registry Editor window locate
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion from
the left pane.

5. On the right pane double-click on RegisteredOwner.

6. On Edit String box under Value data specify the new owner's
name for the computer and press Ok button to save the changes.

New Owner Name
7. Close Registry Editor Window and type WINVER command in
search box to see the new name.
