Yes, this is true, but more often than not, it's not the case. Jaws will just
as easily start speaking in British English if you're an American English
speaker or for Spanish speakers the synthesizer will go to the Castilian
instead of Latin American or vice versa and so on. Sometimes, the synthesizer
will speak the text in a totally different destination language instead of the
source language. I know it's not necessarily a problem with Jaws, but more the
document or webpage or whatever. Not to mention, when you're multi-lingual and
unless you're just a hard core polyglot with super-duper listening skills
switching on the fly and having the alternative language spoken at the same
speech rate as the default language, it can be quite jarring. Especially if
you're not necessarily prepared for it.

This is why in part I suggested to FS a further enhancement of voice and
language profiles. If someone's visiting one of the Spanish language Google
search engines .ar, .es, .mx or even ending in .de if you're a german speaker
then why not have the ability to associate that URL or country's domain with a
previously created voice profile with the corresponding language to assure a
smoother user experience. Same goes for email addresses, file names, rss feeds
and so on. Where you know the language you're going to use is not the default
one. This would save the step of having to use the control+insert+s to switch
back and forth and avoid the hit or miss on the language detection working
because someone used God knows what keyboard layout to type the text you're
trying to read.

Anyway... Language detection is an option, but it's way too flakey to really be
relied on. Switching back and forth with self-created voice profiles in my
opinion at least offers greater control even though there are limitations in
certain scenarios as you point out.

The thing about the language detection is that when it works you can work on a
single document that is written in more than one language and get appropriate
synthesizers for each language. Voice profiles are not especially helpful for
that kind of thing.
