I was going to reply to Tom offlist, but since this list now only shows
the list's email address in the from field, I can't see Tom's address.
Sorry to the rest of you for what will be an off-topic post, but I see
no way around it.
Tom, when I wanted to try out NVDA, the first thing I did is insert a
blank Flash drive and create a portable copy. That way I could try it
out without installing it or making any permanent changes to my system.
I played with the configuration options on the portable copy, and got
everything the way that I wanted it, and then saved those configuration
options. Then I could install it onto a system where I don't have JAWS
and bring all of my configuration changes with me. I still prefer JAWS
for the most part, but on my laptop I use NVDA because it's free and I
can use it legally. Hope this helps.

I actually have considered NVDA as another alternative, so I appreciate this
suggestion.
Since it is also free, I may give it a try as well, perhaps on a computer
that I don't use too frequently at least for the time being.

Tom,
As a general rule, there is no conflict between screen readers. They merely
reside in the computer.
Also, after years of working with various screen readers, might I suggest
NVDA. Unfortunately eloquence cannot be used with it, but the Microsoft
voices aren't too bad.
I have tried several times over the years to really get into window eyes,
including the latest version with MS Office. I've found its control panel
to be confusing. Also, I find it to be a little clunky on the web.
That's just my two cents based on experience. Others here may feel
differently.

Subject: Jaws To Window Eyes
Hello, again.
In an attempt to have an alternative to Jaws, I'm seriously considering
putting Window Eyes on at least one computer here.
However, I have heard from several sources that having two screen readers on
the same computer can create real issues, if things are not done properly.
Also, can I configure Window Eyes to work with Elloquence, which is what
Jaws currently uses?
Finally, I'd like to know how much of a learning curve is going to be
involved with learning to use Window Eyes, especially since I have been a
Jaws user for about the last 20 years.
My time to learn a new speech screen reader is limited, although I will
certainly try to do so if it would be in my best interest.
If this post is considered to be "off topic" for this list, I want to
apologize in advance to the moderator and other list members. I simply
don't know where else to ask this question, given the various e-mail lists
to which I belong.
Sincerely,
Dr. Tom Behler from Michigan
