you can use JAWS's OCR whenever the program you're using has some
information that JAWS cannot read. i.e. a PDF that's reported as "empty
document" but sighted help says there is text. just maximize the window (the
more window, the better the results)and OCR it with JAWS. results won't be
perfect but good enough to make sense out of what's there. navigation is
limited to the virtual window. you don't have to use the JAWSCursor, just
navigate by character, word, line, etc. once you switch to PCCursor, the
virtual window with the OCR text will go away.

Can one use insert, spacebar, o, w when an application has focus instead of
a website? Just wondered as I never have used the OCR feature.

as I understand, speedtest.net is more accurate, but it's a bit more
involved to get started. there is a graphical "begin" or "begin test" smack
dab in the middle of the home page that you or someone sighted needs to
click on. as a JAWS user, you can OCR the window (insert+spacebar, o, w) and
navigate to and click on "begin". note JAWS will speak in a deeper tone
(Rocko voice) to let you know you're in a virtual window. after a while
you'll get the download/upload readings. just look for them. the readings
may not have a label as to what they represent, but they are there.

If you're using a wireless connection, you may find something in the
system tray that tells you the speed of your network connection. But
understand this doesn't have anything to do with your Internet speed.
Rather, it tells you about the connection between your computer and your
router or modem. It's the speed of your in-house network, or how fast
you could move data between your computer and another computer on your
network in your home or office.

If you want to know about the speed of your Internet connection, I use a
site that works fairly well with JAWS.

www.testmy.net/download for download testing, and www.testmy.net/upload
for upload testing.
