I Agree on the repetitive speak in long and/or complex documents. And in my case PDF repetition. And also in my case the non-response of Word is a real pain in the neck.
The only thing we could come up with is that it might be associated with system slightly overloading. Try shutting down everything but the extended document you are working on. This seemed to be a positive step on my machine. Though I can't say it solved everything it seems to have helped at least some.
