I wonder if you have Word set up in print layout, which is recommended for screenreader users.
To make sure: 1. While in Word, press alt-w for the view menu. 2. Arrow down once. 3. You should land on "print." If it isn't checked, check it. 4. I haven't gone this far, but I assume from there you tab to Okay and press enter.
