What I would really like would be a voice modem that allows routing the voice call through the computer's audio hardware (rather than through a dedicated port on the modem itself or with cheap models not at all). And then use a program on the computer for dialing, for answering etc, Get rid of the external telephone handset entirely.
Unfortunately the only devices I have found that actually do all of the needed tasks for this are professional level equipment geared toward computer based call centers and the like. Regular modems have become such commodity equipment that in order to meet the price demand the manufacturers have stripped out every feature that is only rarely used (which leaves the typical model pretty much a data/fax modem regardless of any voice features advertised). Perhaps an answering machine as well, but certainly not the full duplex voice capability that phone conversations require.
