IdentityHashMap<>(equivalentSchemas);

Review Comment:
   Thinking about this more, the copy can be eliminated, because if a schema is
added to the map as shallow-equal, and later turns out to be deep-unequal, the
result of the topmost equals() will be false, and doesn't depend on the state
of the map anymore.

   In that case @urbandan your solution of clearing the map after a false isn't
even necessary, though it does prevent the footgun of calling equals(Schema,
Schema, Map) and then inverting the result. Removing from the map is reasonable
and seems low-cost.

   My comment about recomputation was that we're effectively only caching true
results and not false ones, which should be fine for performance because
failing equality should short-circuit other equality checks during the
recursion.
