Yes, it will need a minor KIP for RPC and client side change. But we can implement the functionality in server sider i.e. in share partition by changing the `acquire` method to support both functionalities earlier. Becuase this will unblock the other issue we have https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/KAFKA-17541.
