Locks: Still some Performance issues related to displaying locks?

If I remmeber correctly we improved quite a lot lock performance. So is there
any lock performance issue while checking locks in edit mode?
Currently we are only displaying action menus without checking locks. So all
"Add New" commands or all the action menus are visible for the end-user and the
editor needs to click on the action menu (or the direct command in case of a
add) in order to see that the engine is locked.
With the current refactoring could we envision to come back to the old previous
mode aka letting users directly visualize locks on the page without having to
click on every action menu? (so we could directly display locks in the main
action menu icon for instance).
