Firmware installation is a two-part affair. First a compressed image is downloaded to flash. Then on rebooting, there is a delay while the upgrade image is decompressed into the main area of the flash.
Currently, during that second stage we have no mechanism to put anything on the screen. I agree this should be improved and it is something we are considering.
