My comment was specifically aimed at post-beta, general use. I would expect to have to do this during beta. I'll check out the preferences again, thanks.
No matter when I check the Settings/Advanced/Software Update option it always states that there is an update available for this remote at the bottom of the screen. This has been consistent since it arrived no matter what time of day or night or how often it is checked and downloaded. It only prompts when there really is something new to get. I only use the SC nightly build (and I haven't upgraded that for a couple of days now). I do not have any special builds of anything that I know of. I've confirmed many times that the before/after builds were identically labeled. Somewhat off the orig. topic, but it seems to me that about every other update I loose the "Now Playing" menu option and screen saver until a post-update reboot.
