OK, after some Squeeze CSI it turns out the adapter that came with the Receiver had been replaced for a smaller third party power adapter to save space in the bookshelf. Not that the original adapter was big but it came with a UK plug which required a travel adapter so the whole package became a bit awkward. Anyway, the third party adapter was broken and though specified to output 9V DC the actual output was alternating between 28V and 35V DC. I guess this must have killed the Receiver.
