I wanted to have a look at RetroBrowser, as I'm really missing some of
the functionality of the old remote.

I downloaded it and unpacked it into what I believe to be the correct
place (SqueezeCenter\server\Plugins\RetroBrowser\), which contains
install.xml and a jive folder containing RetroBrowser.zip (which I
assume doesn't need to be unpacked). I stopped and restarted
SqueezeCenter.

I stopped and restarted SqueezeCenter.

On the Controller, went to Settings / Advanced / Applet installer.
List is empty. Back button doesn't work, but Home does.

I've restarted the Controller three times (on the second, it seemed to
get stuck trying to connect to the Receiver). Still no sign.

Is there some alternative interpretation of the installation
instructions that's somehow eluding me? Or have I just picked a bad
combination of nightly / Controller?

SC: 7.0.1 - 19177 @ Sun Apr 27 00:20:50 PDT 2008 - Windows XP - EN -
cp1252
Controller: 7.0.1 r2287

Something else I ought to check before I try RetroBrowser, or any other
applets, is: how can I uninstall them again?

Does RetroBrowser completely replace the default UI, or does it "just"
lurk under an extra menu tree? (I suspect the former, but until I can
run it...)
