I believe that there's a lot of older hardware out there that can WOL but whose RTCs aren't programmable from the OS. (Or programmable only via BIOS hacks.) So flexible scheduled wakeup for these machines is really possible only via WOL. For instance, all the Asus P4P series motherboards seem to have this limitation.
