Thanks ... As it happens, I've just seen a discussion about LGPL regarding XDoclet and Mark Wutka's DTDParser, so if I make any useful progress I'll ask if HTTPClient can also be released under an ASF Licence.
In the meantime, one of the ways one can use HTTPClient is as a plug-in replacement for the default HttpURLConnection. When used in this way it is not a dependency - JMeter will run without it. I need to do some more tests, as it may turn out that this still does not give enough control over connection re-use.
