I have no idea what Empirix is capable of, but I'd be interested in seeing
someone knowledgeable compare the two.

However, your concern about being able to hand JMeter to QA folks sparked my
interest. From my experience (and I've done most of the coding of JMeter in
it's current form), it is difficult to hand JMeter off to non-technically
inclined QA folks, which is all we have around here. JMeter, in the latest
1.7 beta works quite well when I use it, and, I suspect, when other
programming-literate people use it. It doesn't require any java knowledge
to create a test script. But, it does require some computer savvy to get
JMeter to do what you want it to do. It's tempermental. It's touchy and a
bit fragile - not in the sense that it crashes, but rather that there is no
room for error in setting up your test cases, else JMeter will return
garbage. Once you have your tests set up correctly, you're fine.

Another limitation is that the GUI is new, and lacks a lot of conveniences
you'd expect. It's therefore slow and tedious to set up your test cases,
particularly if they are complex.

OTOH, you won't get this kind of honesty from a commercial product, I
suspect. When something doesn't work in Empirix, the support you get will
probably not help much. Also, you're more likely to get results when you
request an enhancement upgrade to JMeter than with Empirix.
