We use JMeter at my work for functional and stress testing. As far as I can
tell there are still a few bugs that will prevent you from fully automating
the process and also the lack of support for JavaScript is a problem for us
because we have a web application that is fully driven by JavaScript. But
other than that, JMeter is pretty much ready for the prime time.

As far as alternatives go, there are a few tools out there, but the only
thing I would consider using over JMeter is Radview WebLoad (which we also
use at our work but for stuff that require actual JavaScript execution), but
that thing costs a fortune...
