I experienced lockups that went away when I added more memory to my PC. Though I now stand at 256 MB not the 1 GB you have.
JMeter was chewing through memory. Currently, running just a single thread script I see the process "java.exe" taking 150,000 KB and my PC is happy with that. I am getting no Windows popups telling me to close applications because of virtual memory running low. Do you see such popups? I do have the JDK 1.4.2 or J2SE as they now seem to want to call it, not the 1.4.1 you have. Perhaps you can upgrade that?
