The java version may be relevant. It needs to be 1.4 or higher, and a
fully compliant implementation. Some non-SUN JVMs don't seem to be
able to run JMeter.

running jmeter-server. I start the master on a Windows XP box on the same 
subnet and bingo! It works. I need to get this going from the linux box though,
