The performance problems on some platforms is caused by the callbacks. In particular, there seems to be some interaction between the MessageCallback and threading. The end result is that Mozilla is spending a tremendous amount of time with the CPU pegged ... but nothing happening.
Remove the callbacks and the problem goes away. This is definitely *bad* news. We do not want to be fighting this type of browser-specific problem. This whole callback area is really terrible. Let's try to take a step back and give some serious thought to whether or not we can come up with some scheme that will allow us to accomplish thing we want to accomplish without using the callback mechanism so heavily.
