These buttons are done as JmolAppletControls to make them more portable to run on other systems, esp Mac OSX. But this was done in the days before LiveConnect was working ...
The JmolAppletControls themselves are quite simple. But the browser has to allocate an AppletContext for each one, and that is probably a set of complicated data structures.
But, I do not mean to be defending the JmolAppletControl buttons ... I hate them.
They were done because there was no other solution on Mac OSX. And because they were intended to be compatible with the Chime plug-in buttons. So the chime2jmol.pl script generates them when it sees chime buttons. But I am not very happy with chime2jmol.pl these days ... it hasn't gotten much attention and I am not sure whether or not it is practical to expect automated conversion of chime html pages.
I don't know if it is possible, but I would rather eliminate the JmolAppletControl buttons completely.
I would advocate for simple links and the use of hidden
frames and "immediate" buttons for documentation purposes.
I do not think that we should use hidden frames and immediate buttons for help system pages that are designed to show functionality. Hidden frames + immediate buttons add a lot of complexity to a simple page.
Since LiveConnect now works on OSX, It seems to me that we should use straight HTML buttons. I think that is the simplest mechanism and should be the recommended way to create button controls.
