An independent sourceforge project will fail unless it has critical mass. Some large segment of Jmol users would like to have an applet that displays jcamp plots. I don't see any reason not to allow a jcamp applet under the Jmol tent. Architecturally, it would remain distinct. >>For that reason it is not integrated into Jmol.
