Is there any particular reason we are NOT using a check of the file
extension for a last-ditch resolver determination of file type? What the resolver is doing now is wonderful, but not ideal, I think.

I just put something unusual on the first line of an MOL file, and despite the fact that the header is to be ignored, that caused a file load failure. Why not just, after trying all these things, go with a guess based on the file extension? (I know, not all files have extensions...)
