Bob's suggestion is ok for me also.
I hope we will have more frequent official releases ;) , so the integer number 
scheme would get us quickly to really high numbers (not very good IMHO)

That's a really important question.

As you said, that would mean more work on our side to maintain two versions and 
selectively apply patches to the bug fix version. Anyone willing to take the 
job ;) ?

I wonder if more frequent official releases wouldn't be enough (something like 
every 3 months). Open question.
