Summary: image support

Initial Comment:
At the Concord Consortium we have incorporated Jmol into a larger Java program
called the Molecular Workbench. One of the features we added to it is the
ability to place an image in the container. I think this would be a cool
feature for Jmol, in general, to be able to do. Check out an example here:

Done. Full support in 11.6.RC6

-- background (stretching),
-- 2D echo (simple placement), and
-- 3D echo, tied to an {x,y,z} coordinate, scalable, scales appropriately
like text, with "set fontscaling true"

Just wondering what happened to this dialog... Seems like it's agreed that
adding images to Jmol would be very useful, but nothing more after March of
this year appears here. Would it be helpful to propose this to the list? If
so I can do that...

Right. With the callbacks the images could form the basis of a custom GUI
built right into the Jmol frame.

There are lots of possible uses.

Dan,

Right, Charles and I worked together on the navigation mode, and I
developed all the code for the navigation model, which he then integrated
into MW (from what I understand) so that should be the same. That's
certainly all in Jmol now. It is activated using "set navigationMode" and a
number of other related settings.

I'm a bit worried that 10.9 was the base and care might not have been
taken to ensure that improvements in Jmol were folded into MW along the
way. (Well, of course you wouldn't do that, but I hope Charles was fairly
careful in not digging into many of the core classes too much.) 10.9 is a
LONG way back, and a lot of structural changes in the base Jmol code and
new capabilities have been introduced since then. Still, that's more your
problem than mine -- I can probably take just about anything you've got and
add it to Jmol 11.5.

I was thinking just yesterday about the image issue. I can see all sorts
of applications of that. We should definitely talk more about it and get it
discussed on the user forum to see what people would like to have in that
regard. We could have layers, translucency, pick callbacks, all sorts of
things if we wanted.

Bob

Yes. The Molecular Workbench is open source. I believe you have previously
been in contact with Charles Xie from the Concord Consortium regarding Jmol
code questions and possible changes. He is the main programer on the
Workbench. Here's a link to the main site for the software:
http://mw.concord.org/modeler/index.html

Charles' email is [EMAIL PROTECTED] and he can help you with finding the
code within our code that does the image adding, placing, and removing.

There are instructions at the bottom of the download page for accessing
the MW source code or you can browse it online here:
https://svn.concord.org/svn/projects/trunk/common/java/simulations/mw/src/

We have added several new features which are quite intertwined with
version 10.9 I think, so I'm not sure how easily they would port to the new
version of Jmol or how universally they would be used or desired by the
greater Jmol community. One major change is to add 3D roving and
navigation. I believe he may have done this in parallel or slightly before
you added some similar features into the current Jmol.

You can see an example of a molecule tour here (hover over the buttons
below the model to understand the controls and try clicking on the
thumbtacks
too):http://mw2.concord.org/tmp.jnlp?address=http://mw2.concord.org/public/student/fly/hemoglobin2.cml

And a roving activity (done by Frieda R.) here:
http://mw2.concord.org/tmp.jnlp?address=http://mw2.concord.org/public/part2/missimmu/page2.cml

yes, very nice. In fact -- if that's based on modifying the Jmol code, you
need to send us patches to show how you did it so we can incorporate those
changes into Jmol -- based on the license. Is the Molecular Workbench open
source as well?
