False alarm.
I took a look into a class file -- looks like the 12.1 files I have been
creating all have the extra fields LineNumberTable and LocalVariableTable.
So I was compiling them with debug set ON. I must have had that on at some
point and then forgotten to clear out all those files when I switched it
OFF.
Now my JmolApplet.jar file reads 2.005 Mb. OK, that's more reasonable!
