I make that mistake from time-to-time.

It is important that mayscript=true be part of the applet tag, not a
parameter to the applet itself.

 <applet name="jmol" code="JmolApplet" archive="JmolApplet.jar"
         mayscript="true">

I have not yet updated the applet documentation to describe this parameter.

Basically, all it does is set the defaults to be chime
  wireframe; cpk off; background black
instead of the historical jmol defaults
  wireframe 0.1; cpk 20%; background white

I don't have NS7, but it looks fine on IE 5.5, NS 4.76, and Mozilla 1.3

Of course, since there is no Chime solution on OSX you don't actually
*lose* anything :-)

In all seriousness, I am *very* frustrated with Apple. I have sent them
many emails, taken the time to file detailed bug reports, filed feature
requests ... I have not received any pertinent response.
