I am confused about something in the FAQ. (I think
this ends up being a question about Java applets
running on users machines but I figure this is a
consideration of other people here because you want
the applet to load when someone opens a page with Jmol
applet.) In the FAQ it says that Windows Internet
Explorer 5.5 with built in JVM should handle the Jmol
applet and nothing is necessary to run the jmolapplet
from the client side because it will be downloaded
automatically. From the FAQ it sounds like a computer
with Windows ME and Internet Explorer 6.0 should be
fine.
The problem is that in the lab we have one Dell
computer Windows ME and Internet Explorer 6.0. If I go
to the the Jmol applet page, I do not see any applet
windows. I know it works on other computers where I
have the Sun Java plug-in installed, but my excitement
with Jmol stems from the independence of the
obscure-in-the-real world Chime plug-in. Can I expect
a lot of people to still not see anything on a page
with even a a very simple Jmol applet like the first
one on the Jmol applet page?
I also put some text in the code for the applet on a
web page on my wesbsite that I had seen Sun use in the
code for the Java demo applets and that does not come
up upon the aforementionned computer without Sun's
Java either. The text I put in the code is -
alt="Your browser understands the <APPLET> tag
but isn't running the applet, for some reason. "Your
browser is completely ignoring the <APPLET>
tag!).

So essentially the user has no idea they are missing
out. Is there a better way that I should be
addressing this?

Thanks,
Wayne Decatur
