That is correct

Also correct.
The JmolApplet should run on any Windows machine with IE 5.5 and greater.
The Java plug-in is not required (but it is supported if it is installed).

Well, that sounds like either a Jmol bug or a configuration problem with
your machine.

I do much of my development on a WinME box running IE 5.5 using the MSFT
JVM, so normally it works.

Do me a favor ... go to the page:
  http://jmol.sf.net/preview

And see if your machine works with the demos that are on that page.

Let me know if you have problems.

That is the idea. Eliminate the dependancy on the Chime plug-in to make
molecular visualization more accessible to casual users.

I certainly hope that is not the case.

Our goal for the applet is to allow anyone with any browser to be able to
go to a site and see the Jmol applet in operation.

The alt text does not show up because the browser *does* support the
APPLET tag.

The other thing you can try is this: open View -> Java Console before
going to the page. Let us know if you see any error messages printed to
the console.

Try this and the Jmol v10 prerelease demonstrations and let us know what
happens.
