I am not seeing the same behavior. I loaded http://www.wsc.ma.edu/cmasi/organic_lab/organic_lab.html, switched to 100% van der Waals radius, clicked a link to another page, and pressed the back button. The Safari went back to the original page. I am running OS 10.2.8, Safari 1.0.1, and I installed the Apple 1.4.1 Java update.

Mozilla does not, but goes back to a new load of the page in the
default view.
That is the correct behavior.

Is this the fault of the browser, the applet, or me??

The crashing is Safari's problem. Mozilla doesn't seem to have any problems.
